Infants' and Children's Language and Communication

Babies communicate from day one by using gestures, sounds and expressions to share feelings and needs like hunger, sleepiness, or joy.

Through web content, handouts, and videos, this site provides parent resources, such as how to support a child's communication skills, how children's writing and art changes over time and tips on helping children from birth to 3 years of age learn to talk. Information is also available in Spanish.

For an additional resource, the CDC Learn the Signs. Act Early campaign offers a checklist that includes age based language and communication milestones.
