A great make-ahead, healthy, and versatile breakfast. On the go? Make it in a mason jar or other resealable container that travels well.
Adding yogurt can be optional, but provides an added protein boost and a nice creamy texture. In fact, aside from the oats and liquid, all other ingredients are optional. Bananas, peaches or any variety of berries works best for a fruit topping, but with so many mix-in options and combinations, the variations are endless!
Peanut butter banana - add 2 tablespoons peanut butter and 1/2 of a medium banana (mashed) when ready to eat
Peaches & cream - use vanilla yogurt and add cinnamon to the overnight mixture, top with sliced peaches
Cinnamon raisin - add 2 tablespoons raisins and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon to the overnight mixture
While overnight oats are super easy, there are a few tips to keep in mind.
Old-fashioned rolled oats are best for overnight oats, but quick oats can work as well. Instant oats are so small, they’ll just end up almost dissolving in the liquid.
Save mix-ins like fresh fruit or anything crunchy like nuts for adding when you're ready to eat it, otherwise fruit will be mushy and nuts will be chewy. However, dried fruit, which will plump overnight, can be added at night.
Let the oats soak for at least 5 hours — or 8 hours for even creamier results.

- Combine all ingredients except the apple in a jar or resealable container and give the mixture a good stir. Cover/seal and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 5 hours.
- When you're ready to enjoy, chop and add the apple (and more liquid if you want a thinner consistency).
You can adjust the liquid to oats ratio if you prefer a thinner or thicker consistency, just be careful to not swing too much in one direction - use too little liquid, the oats won’t be able to soften enough and get that creamy consistency. Use too much liquid and you’ll end up with soup.
Overnight oats typically last in the refrigerator for 3-5 days (keep in an airtight container), so you can double or triple the recipe to have it last a few days.
